Qasigiannguit, Greenland

Less than a hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle, the aurora borealis casts its light above the colorful village of Qasigiannguit on the western coast of Greenland. Located on Disko Bay, the village of about 1,300 people is home to Greenland’s oldest wooden house (dating to 1734 and now housing a museum) and a single hotel to accommodate visitors. Other lodging available: a hostel, a tent in the mountains, or the museum’s peat hut.
